A Dialog Between Hercules and Iolaus, While Trapped in a Mine Shaft

by White Raven

“It’s dark in here.”

“Yes.”

“How much air do you think we have left?”

“I’ll get us out of here. Don’t worry.”

“Oh, I’m not worried. You always come through. I just wish you hadn’t of come in after me.”

“What was I supposed to do, let you die?”

“I’m dying anyway.”

“I won’t accept that.”

“You may not have much of a choice.”

“As long as I’m breathing, I have a choice.”

“Any move you make will bring the rest of this shaft down on top of me. You know that.”

“I know.”

“Then how do you propose to get us out of here?”

“I’m working on it.”

“In the dark.”

“I’m working on that problem, too.”

“You should just get yourself out of here.”

“Not without you.”

“I’m lost to you. Leave me to die. At least let me die knowing you made it out okay. Do that for me.”

“I’m going to get both of us out of here…alive.”

“This is Hera’s doing.”

“I figured as much.”

“I don’t want you to give her any satisfaction. She planned this whole thing. Luring you in here to save me, knowing you would die, too.”

“You know, for someone who’s in severe pain, you sure are talking a lot.”

“Keeps my mind off of it.”

“Is it that bad?”

“Worse.”

“Is there anything I can do for you?”

“Yes.”

“Besides that.”

“Besides what?”

“Leaving you here to die.”

“Listen to me. This is no good and you know that. I’m ready to quit the race.”

“That may be true, but you overlooked one thing.”

“What’s that?”

“I’m not ready for you to quit.”

“What are you doing?”

“Breathing.”

“So hard? Are we running out of air so quickly?”

“No. I feel air coming in from over here.”

“What are you doing?”

“Feeling my way out of here.”

“You stopped moving. What is it?”

“A pin point of light. I can see light through this crack.”

“Now what are you doing?

“Testing the strength of this cave in.”

“You planning something?”

“The piling I can remove from your leg easily.”

“Right. We’ve discussed this. You remove it and I get crushed, you too.”

“Do you trust me?”

“Of course I trust you. I always have, haven’t I?”

“Then trust me, now. I’m going to cover you, shield you from the debris, then I’m going to get you out of here.”

“You have to move the piling, first. Can you shield me in time?”

“We’ll find out, won’t we?”

“Just remember what I want you to do if this doesn’t work.”

“It will. I told you to trust me.”

“Is that like some type of order I have to obey?”

“Yes.”

“Well, I suppose I won’t have any say either way.”

“What’s wrong? You sound strange.”

“I’m feeling strange.”

“What is it?”

“There are other kinds of darkness than what we find ourselves in right now.”

“Iolaus?”

“Can’t…protest you any more.”

“Iolaus?”

“See you on the other side.”

“Iolaus!”

(CRASH!!!!!!)

“I’ve got you, Iolaus. You’re going to be all right.”

“What…what happened?”

“You passed out. I worked my plan and we’re outside.”

“My leg?”

“Hurt bad, but I think you’ll keep it.”

“And you?”

“Breathing fresh air, seeing sunshine, and we’re both alive. Never felt better in my life.”

“And once again, the mighty Hercules saves the day.”

“Yeah, but listen, the next time you want to follow a rabbit into a hole, make sure it doesn’t have peacock feathered eyes.”

“I thought there was something strange about those eyes.”

“Which is, I’m sure, what she wanted you to think. How else could she tap into your curiosity and lead you into that trap?”

“Good point.”

“And, Iolaus?”

“What?”

“The next time we have an argument about who leaves who behind, you’re going to get knocked out. Once you became unconscious, you were much easier to manage.”

“Just looking out for my best friend, Herc.”

“I know. But so was I.”
