Hero of the Day

by MaryE

"The hunter twirled the grappling hook, his muscular arm gleaming in the moonlight against the dark granite walls of the palace. A soft 'clink' told him that he had hit his mark and, giving a light tug to the rope, he ever so quietly began to scale the wall heading for the large balcony that was three stories above ground level.

His thoughts were dark. 'This is already the fourth time she's run away from home to be with him in the palace. (Wait, didn't I see a play about something like this before?) I'm beginning to get sick and tired of always having to save the day where she's concerned. I've talked to her, scolded her, tried to make her listen to reason...but no..no one ever takes me seriously. Well, this time I'm putting my foot down. I'm not going to come to her rescue any more. Next time, if there is a next time, her family can catch her and she can suffer the consequences. She's a big girl. She'll just have to face the music. I'm tired of scraping my knees on these same walls -- you think there would be a place on the ground floor where they could be together. Hey, maybe I'll suggest it...wait, what am I thinking?"

He hopped onto the balcony, looked around and spotted her small figure hiding behind the velvet curtains.

"Okay, I'm here. Hop on and let's get out of here."

"Thank you for coming to rescue me again, Iolaus. You're my hero."

Yeah, yeah I know. Why don't you two just announce your engagement to the world. Get married. Your family will get used to the idea eventually. It might take years...decades even...but they'd get used to it."

"Oh, no. You don't know how angry they'll be. They'll start a whole incident and I'll never be able to show my face in public again."

"Maybe you're right. But a wise woman once taught me that honesty is the best policy and I try to live by that rule every day of my life. Maybe you should take her advice too. Now, hop on and I'll take you back down to earth, m'lady."

The chivalrous hunter protected the damsel from scrapes and bruises on the way down by taking the bangs against the wall himself.

"Thank you, Iolaus. I'll try to be good from now on."

"Well, I don't expect you to be good all the time -- just try the old war room on the ground floor. It's not used very much any more and it should offer some privacy."

She giggled and hugged him hard and said "I wouldn't have to sneak around like this if you and my son would only let people know you were coming in advance."

"Maybe next time, Alcemene," the hunter giggled back.

The End.
