The Wedding Story

by MaryE

"It was a dark and stormy night. Nobody could have predicted things would turn bad so quickly; but that's exactly what happened."

"Awwwww Dad...do we have to have another romantic story? Ilea always wants to hear the mushy stuff," complained Clonus.

"And what would you rather hear, Son?" inquired the demigod.

"Monsters...Bad Guys! You know, Dad...the hero stuff," replied the boy.

"Yeah, Dad...give us the good stuff!" Aeson echoed.

"Well, as far as the 'good stuff' goes boys, you've had your fill of monster and bad guy stories. It's your sister's turn. If she wants the romantic stuff, that's her choice. And it wouldn't hurt for the two of you to pay attention. You're going to need to be romantic and mushy at least one time in your lives," replied their grinning father.

"Yuck...not me!" protested Clonus. "You'll never catch me kissing a girl!"

"Daddy kisses Mommy and she's a girl," Ilea jumped in to defend romance.

"But that's different. They're just Mommy and Daddy...and they're old. That's not romantic...that's just funny," giggled Clonus.

"Okay kids, enough of that! Back to the story," urged the demigod. "And I'm not old! Now, where was I...oh, yeah...It was a dark and stormy night. Nobody could have predicted that things would turn bad so quickly; but that's exactly what happened."

"The Spring day began with soft sunlight and happily chirping birds. Squirrels and chipmunks chased each other. Rabbits were out for an early morning hop...almost as if they knew that the much feared hunter was otherwise occupied."

"I was to be the best man and oh, but I looked handsome," continued the demigod. "At least, that's what your grandmother said," he added. "But, as good as I looked, I was only the best man. The groom took the prize for handsome that day. In fact, to this very day, there has never been a more handsome groom in all of history. He looked like a prince in his royal blue wedding shirt and the laurel crown in his golden hair."

"Tell me the part Daddy, when Uncle Eye-o-lus' eyes smiled...please?" begged Ilea.

"Okay Ilea, I'm getting to that part. The wedding party was set up in the big field behind the groom's new house...land that was soon to be tilled and planted. Hundreds of people came to celebrate with the happy couple."

"We were all so caught up in the dancing and singing and story telling that we didn't realize how late it was getting and how the darkening skies were a sign of a storm approaching and not just evening falling. The first drops of rain were as big as a man's fist. They burst from the clouds in cold, hard fury. We grabbed all the tables with the food and hurried them into the barn where we continued the party. The bride was happy that it was raining. She said that the rain was a good omen...a sign of fertility and growth."

"The gallant groom swept his beautiful bride up into his strong arms and carried her across the field so that her pretty wedding dress wouldn't get all wet and dirty from the puddles of mud that were fast forming in the drenched field. That's when I noticed it for the first time...a wonder to behold! The groom's eyes smiled when he looked at his sweet bride! Not just one time...but every time he looked at her. And even though that wedding day has long passed, the groom's eyes still smile when they come to rest on his pretty wife."

"Uncle Eye-o-lus' eyes smile at me every time. It makes me so happy inside. Can he marry me too Daddy? Please? I love Uncle Eye-o-lus," begged the little girl with all sincerity.

"Don't be silly 'lea," said Aeson. "A man can only have one wife and he's already married to Aunty ...and they're gonna have a baby tonight."

"Can we visit them and play with the baby? Please, Daddy?" queried Clonus.

"The baby won't be old enough to play with for a while yet. But you can help Aunty Anya change it's diapers..." inserted the grinning demigod.

"Ewwwwwhhhh...uh,uh...not me," protested Clonus. Aeson heartily agreed.

"Okay kids, get to sleep. We've got a big day ahead of us tomorrow," said the demigod as he tucked them into the bed.

"We can't sleep yet Daddy. You didn't get to the best part," stated Ilea.

"What part is that?" asked the puzzled demigod.

"Silly Daddy...you know...And We All Lived Happily Ever After..."
